When your child has cancer
a candle's flame tickles
as your hand passed through.
The sound of laughter
is a slap in the face.
When your child has cancer
you steady weak legs
many times your own,
a broken crutch
and you avoid planning
for days which may never come
living deliberately
in the here and now
your mind burns to remember
every sound, every smell
lest you forget and
become less than you are.
When your child has cancer
you exist in a vacuum
of duties and seldom see the sun.
When your child has cancer
the prayers and well-wishes
of others fall on deaf ears.

The Dress She WearsThe Dress She Wears

It rides the slow curve of her hips
pulls tight against them as she walks
her gait confined to conscious steps.
Not long enough to be lady-like,
too long to be whorish, it falls
heavily over tired thighs, licking
the tops of her knees. The neckline
plunges. A greedy vice, it squeezes
the bulk of her heavy breasts up
until they spill out for all to see.
Its coarse and jealous-green fabric
scratches her most delicate places
rubbing them raw, I know, until
her skin weeps a salty pink.
Made before we were born, it is
given us by our mothers and theirs
before. It suits us just the same.

No. This was a 1/4 life-sized model made in water based clay using a live model in a figure sculpture class I took at a local university. I ended up making a mold, wax copy, and then used the lost wax method produce the final bronze copy. There are easier ways to do it, but you still get to keep your original clay piece too.
